Our Story

Our story starts in 2008, when Rikki looked into the eyes of a 12-week old black and tan Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, she said, “Hello Dexter,” and kissed his wet nose. He replied by licking her nose, and as she breathed in his sweet puppy breath, her life changed in a split second.

Dexter’s little brother, Jaime, a Blenheim Cavalier, arrived in 2010. Dexter initially was irritated with Jaime’s sharp puppy teeth, but they were soon the best of mates. Jaime had a gentle, loving nature and droopy eyes that could melt a block of ice (which more than made up his predilection for shredding toilet rolls).

Rikki’s background in food photography, a passion for cooking, and being a devoted dog mom converged and became a blend of science and art in creating nourishing meals for her furkids. Cooking for your Best Friend isn’t just about recipes. She shares much of what she’s learned as a dog parent and has added practical down-to-earth information that she hopes will empower dog owners to take an active role in their dogs’ well-being.

Rikki’s journey into the realm of dog nutrition began in 2017 when Dexter became seriously ill, and a specialist vet recommended she feed him a ‘prescription diet’ of real food. Dexter soon regained his health and Rikki began exploring dog nutrition and dog health – and the result is this one-of-a- kind dog book: A guide to canine nutrition with bespoke recipes for health boosting meals, nutritious treats and natural home remedies for dogs. It’s also an owner’s manual for dog parents, written by a dog lover, for dog lovers.

Rikki’s writing style is warm, engaging, and relatable. She doesn’t just talk about dog care – she lives it every day. Her book is peppered with personal anecdotes, practical tips, and a deep understanding of what makes dogs tick. Whether you’re a seasoned dog owner or a newbie to the world of canine nutrition, Rikki’s research and recipes will resonate with you.

This book is in a genre of its own. It’s not quite cookbook and not quite dog health book – but soon it will be found in every dog lover’s home, on the lounge coffee table, on a kitchen counter or at their bedside along with the book club’s latest novel.

Your dog will thank you.
